I (Dona Rutherford) first met Lisa (Lageschaar) Lucia in 2015 when she attended the Borderland Queen Clinic here in New Mexico. I remember it well, as she was so sad at having to come to the Saturday session with no makeup on or hair fixed, as a Texas girl just doesn’t do that…my words, not hers. As one would expect, she excelled in every portion of our very comprehensive clinic! Then, in the fall she came back to win the Borderland Throwdown, a 2-day horsemanship competition where the contestants ride 4 different horses with 4 different patterns and 4 judges. Again…she excelled.
As a chaperone for the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, I got to know Lisa even better in Las Vegas in December 2017 when she was the reigning Miss Rodeo America. Her genuineness and friendly spirit immediately made her one of my favorites and it began a friendship that I am very thankful for.
In February 2019, we asked Lisa to come to be our lead instructor at the Borderland Queen Clinic. It was our 14th year, and we had always had a past MRA come to teach the clinic along with our very knowledgeable instructors. Needless to say, Lisa was a big hit with the students, and many wanted her back in the following years.
In February 2022, we once more asked Lisa to be our lead instructor and the students were thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from her. She is patient, kind, and at the same time expecting you to try your best to be your best. With patience and kindness, and yet a firm hand, she expects you to make the effort to learn. Her knowledge of rodeo and the queening industry is remarkable and valuable and very welcome in a teaching venue. In short…any venue would be a better one with her as a part of the teaching staff.
